The Beginning Of An End Of The Traditional Music Distribution Channels

The traditional record labels dominated music market is coming to an end. If you haven’t noticed the latest MP3 download services on Amazon.com, you’re missing the beginning of the end of traditional music distribution era.
The big players now are teaming with social networking web sites such as MySpace.com to find new ways to sell music. Why? They can’t help it. people don’t want to pay for CDs anymore. Plus, there’s no need to buy CDs when you can download them for free somewhere on the Internet. After a few years of battling, the big labels finally realized the trend is irreversible.
Still, this is not new for the independent/unsigned artist s. Independent artists have long been promoting their recordings via unconventional channels. The entry of the big record labels on the Internet music communities will have an impact on the independent artist s. But unsigned artists still have one obvious advantage over the big labels – giving out music for free.
Why ought to you give away free music on the Internet? One obvious reason is that people don’t want to pay any more. people I mean by teenagers and generation Y and beyond. Those are the audiencess who don’t understand life in the absence of the Internet. You probably can find a free copy of any given song on the Internet if you dig far enough.
The latest proof to this is that big record labels are teaming up with the social networking web sites to  promote  and hand out music. This is the marketing niche where independent artists have had since the beginning of the Internet usage. So how much impact will independent artists feel? Big. The social networking communities have been independent artist s’ marketing channel, the entry of big players will certainly push the small performers to the back burners. For independent artists to achieve any form of success on the Internet, they have to take radical steps that big labels won’t take such as giving away music for free. At this point  we  don’t know how the record label/social networking music alliance will work out, but one thing for certain is that the music won’t be all for free downloading.

Distributing Music In A Post- Cd World

While you can hear many negative comments towards the music business over illegal Web music distribution, they do have cause for concern. Since the appearance of Napster and other file sharing communities, the record industry has lost 100’s of millions of dollars in sales. Some of blame may be placed on their conservative approach to promoting artist s, opting for the “American Idol” instead of the avant-garde artists who can excite the next generation prefer the Beatles or Van Halen in decades past. They additionally failed to use the Internet to hand out music before the rampant distribution began. But one thing is obvious, the CD  is on the way out.
Over the last a few years the Compact Disc has experienced negative growth in the market. In fact the Vinyl LP has actually remained selling while the CD  is lowing steam. A couple reasons for this are Web distribution, and the fact that many consumers now use the CD  as a medium to rip music from to their iPod or similar portable music device.
While I lament the fact that nobody sits down and listens to an album anymore, instead using music as a soundtrack to their own lives, there are still ways to hand out your next album. You have to use a little creativity and think outside the box, but you can make it work
USB Flash Drive
Don’t think you would be the first to do this. You would simply be in the company of established artists such as Matchbox Twenty who last year released a full length album on a USB bracelet. The amazing thing about the USB drive is you can include extra features simply such as videos, liner notes, or even alternative file types such as lossless FLAC or multi-channel audio. The price of USB drives has dropped to dollars each, so it is not too much more than CD  replication. Plus, the USB drive may be used for other things (such as storing personal files for work or school) following your fan has moved it to their iPod.
There are a few services provide ing USB drives in bulk loaded with your content and even printed with your name or logo. Call around for the perfect price.
Concept Albums
Web distribution has increasingly made the single popular again. Now that you can chose which songs you want and which songs are junk, many people will download their like red songs and leave the rest alone. I’m going to assume you put all of your endeavor into every song already to not establish filler, but what some artists are trying is the idea album.
Concept albums center around an idea or theme. Thrice recently released the first part of a two-part idea collection. Each box includes two EPs, so the  set will have four discs, one for each element: fire, water, earth, and air. Similarly, Sufjan Stephens has produced a few popular idea albums.  Don’t forget, even performers prefer Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd did idea albums.
These are fun albums to produce, but they are additionally fun to collect. They’re not something you want for one song.
Creative Packaging
This may be the the majority costly tip, but it is additionally many fun. businesses such as Invisible Creature specialize in creating one-of-a-kind packaging for albums. many people prefer creative packaging, and love to collect it. Think about what Apple did with their iPod packaging, it is an adventure just opportunity up the box. Project 86’s latest album, Rival Factions, used a blue jewel case to hides and revels divergent elements in the liner notes, much prefer what you used to find in cereal boxes.
With the right packaging, audiences will need to own your album, not just download a few songs.
Digital Distribution
We all want to sell complete albums, but  we  can’t afford to ignore digital delivery. Services such as TuneCore can get your album sold through iTunes, Rhapsody, Amazon, eMusic and more while you get 100 % of the sales. This is the future of music sales. Radiohead the majority famously provide d their album for sale on their web site independently. Some people aren’t collectors and don’t really care about a single experience, they just want a few songs. Indulge them.
High-quality Multi-channel Audio
Not everyone has access to high-quality recording equipment, but those that do ought to contemplate releasing their albums on master-quality for those who really love their music. Blu-ray Disc is the newest audio disc format which allows uncompressed audio in up to 7.1 multi-channel surround sound. More and more homes are including surround sound systems and Blu-ray is exploding on the market, thanks to the Playstation 3. Even two-channel audio sounds better in high-quality.
Additional features may be added to Blu-ray releases, such as live footage, documentaries and whatever else you can fit on the 50GB space provide d. artists who have released on Blu-ray include Nine Inch Nails, Dave Matthews, John Legend, and Shakira, amongst many others.
But don’t think you’re stuck to Blu-ray. Record businesses such as Linn Records are providing master quality downloads on their web site. Web music stores prefer MusicGiants are additionally providing lossless audio downloads and multi-channel audio downloads.
Get Started
This is only the beginning. Get creative and try new things. Music and art are going to have coalesce to keep it in the physical realm, so think prefer an performer and a businessman. This is your time to shine.

Music Distribution Deals – Know the Facts Before Signing

Posted by Music Blog | Posted in Live Music Blog | Posted on 31-05-2009

With the escalating progression of music technology in the last decade, mainland CD  stores are continuing to decline in popularity, as the trendy demand for digital music downloads continues to crush them further into the archives of history. Claiming more than half of the globes music buying audiences, Digital Music Distribution is the predominant method of music marketing the world provides us now.
More and more artists are appearing on the scene with highly polished albums, mostly produced entirely under their own steam. They have become resource ful singular empires, holding sole rights and authenticity as unconstrained producers and marketing agents of their own products. The artists are ready to take the world by storm by hooking themselves up with one of the many distribution businesses currently available.
But as an independent artist, what are you really signing up to in a distribution deal?
many digital distributors provide artists the opportunity to have their music available on many of the popular and esteemed music selling outfits; Apple iTunes being one of the the majority popular playgrounds for current music consumers. But whilst they can promise to get your music on the right path, how is it going to be found amongst the billion other artists competing for sales? Consider that the majority central stream artists have many more dollars poured into their advertising and marketing person a’s than the unsigned artist can ever afford. Major acts are funded by major pockets ensuring the perfect opportunity of sales.
One answer to this is that many unsigned artists feel that by simply having their music made available alongside mainstream artists is a elevate to their credibility, affording them and their music a much higher distinction. It’s certain that a nice deal can grant your music a triumphant victory if you manage to populate vintage music selling web site s. Your only subsequent aim is to actually make sales on them. Otherwise what’s the purpose following all?
Deals, terms and conditions change from business to business, so it is worth looking around and researching which kind of distribution method is right for you. There are many worthy deals, and probably just as many scams, circulating the information highway.
If you’re thinking of accepting a distribution deal, before signing the dotted line it is necessary to ask questions such as:
• Does the deal include any publicity or promotional advantages to the artist?
• Are there any payments I must make, statutory, collective or alternatively?
• What percentage of royalties will I receive, and how are payments handled?
• can I be provide d with an estimation of how profitable your distributive methods are?
• What are my rights in terminating the contract?
• Am I solely responsible for tax declarations on my net income?
Other things you must check before signing are the ‘exclusivity’ terms. These can greatly inhibit your freedom. Does a deal involve licensing your music digitally (via like red Web formats) or does the deal additionally include physical sales? Some are highly exclusive in nature whilst others give you rights to continue with marketing your music via other channels.
Bear in mind that many reputable and authorised distributors, such as CD Baby for one, won’t allow an performer to exploit other distribution channels, as the two events run the risk of putting your music on the exact same web site s. A hassle major stores and distributors can do in the absence of, and an understandable clause too.
You must read the terms of an agreement in full. It’s absolutely essential that you fully understand what’s expected from you as well as what’s being provide ed!
Here is a cautionary example:
A music distribution web site currently provides a deal for both digital and physical music sales, (the terms of agreement are publicly available for download on the web site ).
The web site appears to charge $99.99 as a one off payment. Upon checking their terms of agreement however, it states:
“After one year of promotion,  we  may archive, remove and/or su spend your Works from the Service in the absence of terminating this Agreement.”
What then If the agreement is still in place but your work is no longer made available on their web site?
“You can pay an annual fee, which is to be determined, to insure that your Materials are not archived, but displayed and provide ed for sale following the first year of Service.”
So if you refuse to pay this annual fee, the web site still holds all rights to license and sell your music as expressed in the agreement you already signed!
This is not necessarily wrong but is it what you want? Always check the small print and read any agreement thoroughly. As a general rule be wary of web sites that ask you to pay for distributing your music. On the basis that a web site ’s marketing strategies were fruitful, and they believed that your music is nice enough to reap a profit, why would they be asking you to pay them in advance? Suffice to say that not all web sites that request payment from an performer deliver an unsatisfactory service. Speak to other artists whose music is being distributed and see how the deal is working for them. If something doesn’t sound quite right in any deal, double check with the distributor. If you still receive an insufficient response, you can always seek a legal opinion. But if you’re really in doubt, perhaps you’re better off in the absence of !
If you’re marketing your music through a label they ought to be sufficiently taking care of your interests. A reputable label with ensure that all terms in a distribution  set ting are obvious and fair to all events involved. Being part of an honest label is usually a nice way to relieve yourself from some of the finer pressures attached to direct schemes. They will of course additionally expect a cut of the profits but will usually have a nice degree of interest in maintaining their own artist s’ affairs in an appropriate manner. If the performer is happy the label thrives upon its nice reputation, and its integrity towards its artist s.
Despite the odds, sales margins have better for thousands of unsigned artist s, simply because of the greater variety of marketing mediums available. You can not only market your music yourself, but allow others to do it for you. The more places your music is available the higher your opportunitys are of achieving sales. But as with any enterprise, money and prof it is the primary goal, and and so you ought to continue with caution before handing your personal work over to anyone.
There are many reputable distributors, who promise to do the job and actually deliver what they stated. But, as with everything in life, there are those that you would rather not be involved with. So research as many as possible, and ask as many questions as you see fit. After all, a year is a long time to get stuck in a deal you later realised doesn’t quite work for you! Not only would a bad deal cause you much frustration in its limitations, but can additionally undermine your confidence in participating in future marketing opportunities.

Neil Diamond Concert Blues

Hearing Neil Again
I heard about the Neil Diamond performance coming to Charlotte on December 12. I became excited and tried to buy tickets. After a few hours on the Internet, I realized this has been going to be a treat reserved for those who can afford to pay the scavenger’s exorbitant prices for the tickets. Not that Neil is not worth it, I just can’t afford it. Thus, my moodiness tonight. I want to hear Neil in person one last time, and can’t.
Loving Neil has been a lifetime joy of mine. He captured my heart in the 60’s with “Cherry, Cherry” and later with “Song Sung Blue” and “Stones”, and many others. I saw him in performance in Charlotte in 1977. After the performance, I drove behind the coliseum, saw a bus, thought it has been his and chased it all over Charlotte at high rates of speed until I lost track and has been forced to go home. I honestly thought I would follow this bus to it is destination upon which Neil would depart and walk into my arms to stay forever. I has been 29 years old then.
I’m 61 now, and still have that fantasy…someday I will take Neil into my arms and convey my absolute appreciation of his skill and sensitivity. His songs guided me through years of self-discovery, new motherhood, loss of love, and finally rediscovering myself. Regardless of my mood, Neil’s music can take me there. I nursed my babies in the wee hours of the morning to the sound of Neil, I loved my husband in the wee hours with the echoes of Neil’s music in my head, I endured my boring jobs with the beat of Neil’s music in my limbs yearning to dance, to express, to feel his words with motion. Neil always had a song that would relate to whatever has been going on with my life. I need to let him know it. I need to go to this performance. It will probably be by last opportunity.
The performance is a big deal to me. It’s probably a big deal to Neil. We’re both getting older, both needing to justify our years, both needing to be appreciated, both needing to feel that we’ll be remember ed. He will be remember ed for his skill, but will I be remember ed as the the dedicated, lifelong fan?

How To Encourage A Concert The Creative Way

Posted by Music Blog | Posted in Live Music Blog | Posted on 21-05-2009

Don’t know how to  promote  a performance? Well that’s probably not unusual because there really is not one method you can use for each performance or event. Concert  promoters make a fortune doing this for a living so certainly you can’t expect my humble little price of the Internet to be able to tell all, but I can provide some pointers and ideas.
I used to  promote  seminars, not really gigs but when I help ed a friends band get some publicity and promotion it seemed to work. I got some new pointers from a book and they seemed to help to.
First – contemplate who your target audiences is. What other gigs / gigs / events would they go to?  we  gave out flyers at other gigs in the area where other performers in the same musical style played. Hence our target audiences has been there and an simple target. One of the performers even announced our performance for us at the end of the  set.
Second – flyers. Okay, I ought to have made this the first point – I has been just testing you!. Try to put them up / hand them out where your target audiences will see them (take a hint from the first tip) and make sure you don’t just litter the place and aren’t posting them anywhere illegal. Make sure they will stand out, so colour is nice, but expensive. You will be able to get many more leaflets / flyers out there if you buy black and white. It may be an idea to go to the local college and see if you can get a graphic design student to design a leaflet for you in ex change for free tickets.
Thirdly – get on the web. MySpace.com has a amazing music section, and it can’t hurt to  promote  your performance here. can be link to a Youtube video of your band playing, or put clips from your last show if you have a video of the event.
Fourthly – the majority local papers have a what’s on  lead or events page. Make sure you have a listing here which is usually free. Is your performance newsworthy in any way? Try contacting the paper to see If the y will do a write up. Are you playing for a charity or worthy event? Are there any unusual circumstances around the gig? On a slow news day the paper can just get your photo in the paper and give a small write up. Try getting a free mention on the radio as well.
Fifth – Alice Copper has been played in London. To  promote  the show he had a big truck drive around with an advertising board on the back. The truck “happened” to break down right in the middle of London, and caused traffic jams that made the news. people in the UK saw a big picture of Alice Cooper right on there TV screen, and soon everybody knew Alice has been playing a performance in the UK. Now, I don’t suggest you do this, but be creative. What about putting stickers promoting your event on coins, pasting flyers to your vehicle and leaving it parked in a busy car park where lots of people will see it. Try putting stickers on any mail you send out – you’d probably be surprised how many pairs of hands that mail goes through!
I think that’s enough for know to wet your appetite. As a  last thought, contemplate your budget. It’s decidedly simple to spend many money promoting a performance if you don’t know how. I’ve learned from some of my mistakes which is why I bought the book – I try to learn from other people ’s mistakes these days.
If you really want to know how to  promote  a performance and get the full range of techniques I suggest taking a look at the book as well.
